“What domain name should I get?”
This question appears like clockwork as new Entrepreneurs begin to build their online empires. Here’s the answer I got when I asked the question many moons ago.
“Listen Newbie, if I could think of a killer domain name, I’d buy it for myself!
Just get in there and think of something…” So that is exactly what I did. I thought of twenty to thirty “killer domain names” and bought them all as if we were running out of words (which we are and having a killer domain is like owning prime Real Estate on the Internet). However, after countless tests and spending hundreds of dollars later, I found that there is a better way to go about choosing a great domain name. So hang on while I explain…
First off, you’re probably asking yourself, “Why do I need a killer domain name in the first place?” Well, for one it is the quickest and cheapest way you can begin to brand yourself or your company. In today’s marketplace, if you don’t own your domain name you will be at a disadvantage to those that do. A good domain name shows professionalism.
Because, believe it or not,
You are being judged from the moment your prospect(s) types in your website. If you send them to some replicated website with an affiliate link (ie: www.replicatedwebsite.com/1234567) or sub-domain (ie: www.subdomain.myaffiliate.com), you will appear to be far-fetched. Even worse, if you send them emails
from an address such as (i.e: Jimmythehammer69@hotmail.com), you are immediately discredited. As if that’s not enough, you’ll lose a ton of business because the average person won’t bother to type in the extension, and you’ll never get the credit you deserve.
Here’s the deal…
Let’s assume, Jimmy “The Hammer” recognizes his problem and wises up, here’s how he would go about choosing and securing a killer domain and cleaning up his image.
First, he would run over to GoDaddy.com and get an account. GoDaddy.com is a great platform for Newcomers, and being unfamiliar with the whole process, having an awesome 24 hour support helps…
Then it comes down to what the actual domain name should be.
Now let’s suppose, Jimmy is with a Network marketing company, but he’s unsure how long he’s going to stay with them so he decides to brand himself instead of his company (smart move Jimmy). He does a little research and finds some helpful tips when selecting a killer domain. The first three things he learns is .com .com .com, always buy a .com! Not only is it easier to remember, but search engines give .com’s priority. He also learns his domain name should be: short, sweet, easy-to spell, easy-to say, and above all, easy-to remember. He knows that if he chooses anything with numbers he needs to purchase both the numerical and alphabetical domain name (ie: www.NeverWork925.com) and (www.NeverWorkNineToFive.com). The same thing goes for anything that can be pluralized, (ie: www.NewYorkYankee.com and www.NewYorkYankees.com). The key here is to leave no room for misinterpretations.
For all these reasons, Jimmy considers: www.MeetJimmy.com, www.WhoIsJimmy.com, and/or, www.JoinJimmyNow.com. He chooses the latter as his domain, because it tells the reader where they are going and why, plus it adds an element of curiosity (who is this Jimmy guy anyway?). He goes to his GoDaddy.com account and manages to purchase his domain name for $10 without being sold on all the extras. (*TIP: GoDaddy.com will try to sell you everything under the sun on your way to checkout, so just get the domain without any bells and whistles.)
Although, the domain is not “hosted,” Jimmy can forward and mask the domain to his companies replicated website. Now Jimmy can give out his domain name and his prospects cannot lose their way as they would with the long and cumbersome, affiliate links that are given.
Do you follow me so far?
Basically, Jimmy now “looks the part,” thanks to his ten dollar investment with GoDaddy.com. You, Jimmy, and I know it’s all really just a vanity domain. But by then, to the prospects Jimmy seems to have it together. Now, all he has to do is spend a couple more dollars, to get rid of the cheesy email address (ie: JimmyTheHammer69@hotmail.com).
So let me summarize and review…
To really get a handle on this put yourself in your prospects’ shoes. The prospect used to see Jimmy’s links as www.myreplicatedwebsite.com/1234567.
Now they see, www.JoinJimmyNow.com and receive emails from Jimmy@JoinJimmyNow.com.
How did Jimmy wise up so quickly? That’s a great question! Jimmy invested in himself. He went out and purchased one of the most important pieces of literature ever developed for the network marketing industry, and has helped countless other businesses. It’s a little red book called, Magnetic Sponsoring and it changed his life.
Domain names 101. Nice post.
